Introduction to Ayurveda
‘Ayu’ means life and ‘Veda’ means knowledge, hence Ayurveda means the science of life. It is that knowledge of life, which deals elaborately and at length with conditions beneficial or otherwise to the humanity, and to factors conducive to the happiness, or responsible for misery or sorrow besides indicating measures for healthful living for full span of life.
Ayurveda is the knowledge that indicates the appropriate and inappropriate, happy or sorrowful conditions of living, what is auspicious or inauspicious for longevity, as well as the measure of life itself.
DEFINITION OF AYURVEDA:
HITA AHITAM SUKHAM DUKHAMAYUSTASYA HITA AHITAM i
MANAM CA TATCA YATRAOKTAM AYURVEDA SAOCHAYATE ii
Ayurveda was derived from the most cherished scriptures known as Vedas. They are Rig, Sama, Yajur and Atharvana Vedas.
Ayurveda is the science of life” it deals with special emphasis on the biology of life. The goals of the science are preservation of health and curing of diseases, vide reference.
Swasthaya swasthya rakshanam, aturasya vikaran prashmanam.
AYURVEDA’S FOUR GOALS IN LIFE
- The fulfillment of your duties to the society.
- The accumulation of possessions while fulfilling duties.
- Satisfying legitimate desires with the assistance of one’s possessions.
- The realization that there is more to life than duties, possessions and desires.
DHARMA ARHTHA KAMAMOKSHAMNAM AROGYAM MULAMUTAMAM I
ROGASTASYA APAHARTHAM SREYASO JIVITASYA CA II
Thus goal of life is true freedom from death and disease; enjoyment of uninterrupted physical, mental, and spiritual happiness and fulfillment. But you stand to lose your ability to enjoy life if you overindulge, and disease is one of nature’s way of saying you’ve overindulged. Either you limit yourself or mother nature will limit you.
Why Ayurveda?
The World Health Organization has reported that in fifty years all the organisms, which are currently sensitive to the existing antibiotics, will become resistant. Thus the way of Ayurveda shows wisdom, as it is impossible to have drugs to kill all the harmful organisms, but instead the answer lies in strengthening the immunity of the individual to deal with the problems effectively.
WHY AYURVEDA AS HEALING SCIENCE ?
Ayurveda empowers you to take control of your own life and health, with the aim of preventing illness, as opposed only to treating diseases once it has arisen, for example, if you have a headache, you will not only be recommended a treatment that can be swallowed, rubbed, or inhaled but also asked to look into at the imbalance in your environment, your lifestyle, diet and mind that has given rise to the pain. Once the imbalance is identified, there are some traditional remedies that are frequently helpful in the short-term, but in the long term you are enabled to live in such a way that the cause of pain never returns, termed as psychoneuroimmunity by the scientist of the new genre, it formed one of the core concepts of Ayurveda medicine.
Origin and history
CARAK SAMHITA the oldest known and most trusted thesis on Ayurveda, also one of the Brihat Trayis (three bigger text of Ayurveda), the story runs this way,
Fifty eminent sages gathered together on the slopes of Himalaya to discuss how to get rid of the common diseases which were causing so much ill health among human beings and interfering in the performance of their duties. It was concluded to approach lord Indra (lord of immortals) who had learned the healing science from Ashwini Kumaris (twin physicians of the gods) who in turn learnt Ayurveda from the creator of universe lord Brahma. Sage Bharadwaja volunteered to go to lord Indra, which proved to be most beneficial. More or less similar versions are given in other text as well. Just the way Apollo and Troth revealed the Greek and Egyptians system of medicine to their respective people, so also lord Brahma to Indians.
The disciples are categorized in two viz. Caraka School and Dhanwantari School catering to medical and surgical school of thoughts primarily.
No doubt Ayurveda was originated in India sub-continent, as the texts clearly indicate so. Without giving significance to its mythological origin we see that the science endeavored in these classics is worth and recognized with its due respect to its application, theories, treatments, results and as the whole science.
Basic concepts
The aim of Ayurveda to is to avoid excess in life (food or otherwise) and to supplement what is deficient. This gives rise to the basic principles of Ayurveda said as,
Sarvada sarva bhavanam samanyam vridhi karnam I
hrasa hetu visesha ca, pravritir ubhayasya tu II
The science has its strong roots in the fundamentals which govern its approach towards treatment, the foremost being the concept of
Lok purusha samyavad “man being an epitome of universe”
Thus every organism is a mini universe in himself, which is governed by the five elements, which form the three dachas namely Vaata, Pitta, and Kapha, hence forth we have the core concepts of Ayurvedic healing as Pancamahabhutas and Tridoshas. Every individual is unique in spite of being composed of same five elements as the degree of composition is variable based on a number of factors from the time of conception to current lifestyle. Thus we often come across a genuine Ayurveda physician prescribing different remedies for a group of people suffering the same complaints because they differ in their basic constitution called as ‘PRAKRITI’ ironically we may see same drug being prescribed to a group having different ailments altogether, reason being the same as described above.
THE FIVE ELEMENTAL THEORY and THREE DOSHAS.
The five elements being Space ( Akasa), Air ( Vayu ), Fire ( Tejas ), Water ( Jala ), and Earth ( Pritvi ).
Which form, Vaata the energy of kinesis from Akasa and Vayu, Pitta the energy of metabolism from Jala and Tejas, and lastly the
Kapha formed by Jala and Pritvi put together.
Pancakarma Ayurvedic way of detoxification
It has now been scientifically shown that a natural purification treatment can successfully eliminate environmentally toxic substances such as polychlorinated biphenyl (PCB's) and pesticides from the body, without damaging side effects.
A study at the Institute of Science, Technology and Public Policy at Maharishi University of Management in Fairfield, Iowa in collaboration with a special laboratory at Colorado University demonstrated that classical Pancakarma treatment eliminated up to 50% of the detectable toxins in the blood.
Chemicals Iinjure Health
The world's largest facility for substance identification, the Chemical Abstracts Service in Columbus, Ohio, USA, currently has more than 13 million artificial substances registered. At least 100,000 of these industrial commodities combine into a chemical “soup” which we constantly absorb through food, air and our skin. Experts calculate that in Germany 30% of the population suffer from environmentally induced diseases.
Most of the toady's environmental toxins are lipophils that accumulate in the fatty tissues of the body. These fat-soluble toxins are associated with a range of diseases such as hormone disruption, immune system suppression, allergies, diseases of the liver and skin, various types of cancer, neurological illness, reproductive disorders and deformities.
The study
The study consisted of two parts: a cross-sectional comparison and a longitudinal pre and post treatment. It was designed to examine the level of contamination by toxins in the population and the effectiveness of Pancakarma treatment in eliminating these poisons.
Pancakarma Treatment
Several modalities in the Ayurveda detoxification procedure use non-toxic, lipophilic materials, such as clarified butter in the oleation phase and herbalized sesame oil in the massage and enema treatments. These traditional methods are believed to sequentially loosen and remove lipid soluble toxicants from their deposited sites and stimulate their elimination.
The cross-sectional study;
88 subjects, age 45 years and older, participated in the cross-sectional study: 48 had previously undergone the detoxification procedure an average of 18 times and 40 had not. Blood samples from both groups were sent to the Analytical Laboratory in the Department of Environmental Health at Colorado State University that was blind to the treatment status of the subjects.
PCBs and Pesticides Found in Blood Samples
Blood samples from both cross-sectional groups were assayed for 17 lipophilic toxicants, including 9 polychlorinated biphenyl (PCB) congeners and 8 pesticides and metabolites, such as DDE, a by-product of DDT. The specific PCBs and pesticides that were studied had either been previously linked to major health problems or had been of high concern for their potential toxicity.
The results showed that blood levels of PCBs and several pesticides were significantly lower in the detoxification group than in the controls.
The longitudinal study;
In the longitudinal study, blood samples from 15 subjects who participated in the Vedic Approach to Health Ayurvedic detoxification procedure were assayed, pre- and post-treatment, by Colombia State University Analytical Laboratory.
The results of the two-month longitudinal study showed that PCBs and Beta-HCH levels were reduced by 46 percent and 58 percent respectively in the MVAH detoxification group. Without this intervention, the expected drop in PCBs and Beta-HCH over two months would be only a fraction of one percent. Previously, no method had been scientifically verified to reduce levels of these lipid-soluble toxicants in the human body without causing negative side effects.
Assessment
The study came to two conclusions:
1) An alarming finding of the study was that PCB and DDE levels appear to be unexpectedly high in the general population, and may actually be increasing. This is surprising since these toxicants were banned decades ago in many countries. However they have not disappeared from the environment since they have half-lives several years in duration. Also they are still entering the food chain through imports.
2) Within days Pancakarma treatment eliminated a large proportion of these fat-soluble toxins from the body. Without this intervention, the expected drop would be only a fraction of one percent.

By Centuries-Old Detoxification Procedure.

PANCAKARMA IN CLASSICS:
The science describes the concepts of:
- Agni (digestive fire which incorporates all the elements of metabolism),
- Ama (toxin’s produced due to various etiologies),
- Srotas (channels of body carrying products of metabolism),
- Kriya kala ( a six stage common progressive pathogenesis for all the clinical condition),
- Prakriti (constitution of each individual based on doshas),
- Shamana and shodhana chikitsa (treatment modalities).
Definition of amma:
Usmano alpa balatvena dhatu mandhyam apachitam I
Dustam amashaya gatam rasam ammam prachakshyate II
A HR SU
When the digestive elements of metabolism in body become corrupted they lead to improper functioning and malformation of body tissues these malformed tissues are lodged in various places and accordingly produce disorders. These metabolic toxins generated are called as ama.
KRIYA KALA
The progression in six stages is illustrated here with help of arthritis as an example.
1) CHAYA / ACCUMULATION:
An individual may begin to have a diet and life style which is not conducive to his
Constitution, this upsets his metabolism, blood flow, mental state and digestion.
2) PRAKOPA / AGGRAVATION:
Symptoms increase, including abdominal pain and spasms, increased gas and increased constipation.
3) PRASARA / DISSEMINATION:
Symptoms such as dry skin, joint stiffness, headache, and painful bowel movement begin to occur.
4) STHANA SAMSRYA / RELOCATION:
The join pains become very prominent symptom now.
5) VYAKTA / MANIFESTATION:
The disease can now be identified as arthritis.
6) BHEDA / DISRUPTION:
The specific manifestation of arthritis, coldness, stiffness, dryness, and severe pain, will be evident.
The earlier this staging of the dosha is done, the earlier the appropriate therapy can be adopted. This therapy is done keeping in mind the severity of the condition, thus a palliative or a purificatory therapy is administered which is referred as samana or shodhana therapy. The later shodhana is referred as PANCAKARMA THERAPY.
Its is a five fold therapy comprising of three stages.
STAGE 1-PRE-OPERATIVE PHASE
Includes
- Langhana, deepana, pachana -Correcting the agni (digestive fire) by the means of fasting, giving drugs stimulating the agni.
- Snehana (oleation) -Lipids agents are then administered in a specific mode to bring back the toxins in the gut. This also includes
external therapies such as massages. This is important part of detoxification and may take 3 to 7 days based on the individual.
- Swedana (sudation) - Fomentation of body through various modes of sweating, in order to ripen the accumulated dosha to favor
there expulsion.
STAGE 2 – OPERATIVE PHASE
This is the actual phase of detoxification where in the accumulated toxins are eliminated through specific route selected by the physician based on his current health needs. The first three major forces are based on the dosha most of the time.
- Vaman (emesis therapy): it is a process of eliminating the accumulated toxins through the oral route by the mode of induced vomiting. Its advised in conditions arising due to kapha dosha.
Duration : 1 day.
- Virechana (purgation therapy) : it is a process of eliminating the accumulated toxins through the anal route by the mode of induced purgation. It is advised in conditions arising due to pitta dosha.
Duration : 1 day.
- Basti (enema therapy) : it is a process of eliminating accumulated toxins through the anal route, using enema. It is a sure short remedy to disorders of vaata dosha. Duration : depending on the merit of the case it can last minimum of 8 days to maximum of 30 days.
- Nasya (nasal medication) : instillation of drops through nostrils to expels doshas accumulated in the region over the level of clavical (collar bone).
Duration : not specific.
- Raktamokshana (blood letting/ venesection) : this is method of expelling doshas accumulated in the blood, through blood letting, it can be done using leeches or by venesection.
Duration : not specific
STAGE 3 – POST OPERATIVE PHASE
This is a phase after the elimination of toxins is done; it primarily includes diet and activities prescribed in order to restore the corrected digestive fire back to normalcy.
Duration : Subjected to the kind of elimination done and results obtained. May extend to minimum 3 days or maximum 7 days, however a self-disciplined person need not be monitored if he can follow the foresaid restrictions by the physician.
This form of detoxification is also advised in the text to be done annually based on the individuals constitution, current health status, season, etc.. and thus is advised to be done by the healthy individuals as well.
